What You Need to Know About Burr Coffee Grinders

imageA burr grinder of good quality can make a huge difference in the taste and consistency of your coffee. There are many different models out there that range from cheap options that are able to perform well in tests to expensive grinders with additional features.

The key is selecting the right model to meet your needs. Burr grinders feature two cutting surfaces which can be moved closer together or further apart to regulate the size of the grinding. They are available in flat or conical designs and are powered either by a wheel or a gear reduction motor.

Direct Drive

As the name suggests, direct drive burr grinders are powered by a low speed motor that is directly connected the burrs. This means that when the machine is operating simultaneously, both the motor and the burrs rotate at the same time which results in a remarkably quiet operation. In contrast to lower-quality motorized grinders and spinning blade spice grinders, which result in an uneven grind, a quality direct drive burr grinder delivers an exceptionally uniform, fine grind that is perfect for espresso and other demanding methods of brewing.

Burr coffee grinders are equipped with one or more burrs that are adjustable with a variety of teeth that can be adjusted to be more or further away. This ensures that the beans are crushed to small particles. The sharp edges enable the maximum extraction of flavor and smooth, sweet flavor in your coffee. Although there are a few cheap, commercial grinders that can grind beans into the same size by pulverizing them, rather than cutting them, this process often results in jagged particles with different sizes and uneven surfaces which tend to extract less of the delicate flavors of your coffee.

Most home grinders come in two types of burrs: flat or cone shaped. Flat burrs, also known as flat plate, are used on all kinds of grinders, regardless of the speed or step. On the other hand, cone-shaped burrs, referred to as conical burrs, are more commonly seen in low speed models and gear reduction models.

While there are many features to take into account when choosing a new burr grinder, the most important factor is almost always going to be the method you prefer to use for brewing. The key to a great cup of coffee is a properly ground coffee bean, therefore choosing the best grinder for your needs is crucial.

The next important thing to look for in the burr grinder is the motor type and whether it's non-stepped or stepped. Non-stepped grinders are not equipped with pre-set grinding settings from the manufacturer. They provide you with full control over the size of your grind. However they can be difficult to dial in because you have to turn a lever which is slightly off-center from its normal position. Stepped grinders such as the Baratza Sette or Vario are more traditional and have the appearance of a series of steps that are easy to find and recognize when you look at your burrs.

Gear Reduction

A burr grinder consists of two revolving abrasive surfaces separated by a distance determined by the user to cut and grind food items like beans and spices, peppercorns, and salt. The grinders can be operated by hand or electrically. They are more expensive than blades grinders, however they are more durable and produce less heating during grinding. This is crucial to preserve the quality of the final ground product. They are available in a variety of styles with various features to meet the requirements of a variety of users.

A high-quality burr grinder will aid in making excellent espresso and coffee. Poor quality grinders are more likely to build up heat during the process of grinding which can alter the oils present in the beans and generate static electricity that could cause the grounds to jump out of the grinder if it is opened at the incorrect time. High quality burr mills have a powerful, quiet motor that turns slowly and at a slower speed. This minimizes the transfer of heat to the beans.

Some grinders claim to be burr-grinders, however, they cut beans, not pulverize them. This isn't what a true burr-grinder does. These grinders typically have uneven, jagged particle sizes which extract the flavor unevenly and can result in a muddy flat, sour, and murky taste.

When choosing a high-quality burr grinder you should consider a low speed setting, a large size for the grinding burrs and a solid construction to maximize control over the generation of heat and help preserve the quality of the beans. Consider whether you prefer a dosing or non-dosing burr grinder. This will determine how much coffee can be grind at a time. A majority of manual vs electric coffee grinder grinders are dosing machines, but are also available as non-dosing models for those who just want to grind enough coffee to make one cup at each time. The Encore has a low-speed, gear reduction motor that is quiet and capable of producing a consistent, fine grind with no heat or static charge.

Ceramic

A ceramic burr mill uses a simple, but reliable mechanism that grinds the beans evenly. Its low-speed operation results in a lower temperature, which preserves coffee's delicate flavor. It is also more precise than blade grinders because the ceramic burrs shred instead of cracking the bean, creating a finer grind. This guarantees a more regular extraction, whether you're making drip coffee machine grinder or espresso.

The OXO burr set performed very well in our tests, compared to other grinders that are budget-friendly. It's a huge leap from the cheap blade grinders found in many kitchens, but true coffee enthusiasts might need something a little more adjustable. A top-quality burr grinder will create a perfect grind for all coffee-making methods and the top ones are more precise than cheaper models.

The majority of the burr grinders we've tested use conical burr sets. In these, an elongated ring is moved upwards and downwards over a cone-shaped, spinning burr in the middle. They provide a more precise and more even grind than blade grinders we've test. They are also louder and cost more than lesser burr grinders.

Some of the most expensive grinders organic coffee beans like the Fellow Ode Gen 2 use flat burrs which are easier to calibrate. They also tend to be quieter than the conical burrs found in some of our favorites. Some of them offer a larger range of settings and others allow you to switch out the burrs in the one best home espresso grinder for brewing techniques like French press or espresso.

Most burr grinders can be cleaned easily by putting them in the dishwasher. They're also generally longer-lasting than the steel blades in some of our other test winners, like the Breville Smart Grinder Pro.

The Baratza Virtuoso+ has a very long-lasting burr grinder, and is a good choice if you're seeking a high-end tool that'll last. The flat burrs are designed to last for up to 500 pounds of coffee, which should suffice for around 10 years, if you drink roughly a pound a week.

Steel

Burr grinders employ an abrasive pair that rotates on surfaces to grind food items. They can be conical or flat in shape and are constructed of steel or ceramic. The grinding surfaces have a substantial distance between them by default. However, they can be moved closer together to adjust the size of the ground material. A good burr grinder minimizes heat generation during the grinding process since excessive temperatures can cause oils and aromas to dissipate. This is crucial to preserve the flavor of coffee.

imagestainless steel grinder steel is used to create the two burrs. It is durable and can withstand the impact which could harm ceramic burrs. This material wears out over time and will require replacement. Fortunately, many manufacturers offer burrs to replace them that can be easily exchanged for a longer life and a more consistent grind.
