Origins
Established in 1917, Toto's beginnings mirrored Japan's development. In the first half of its existence, the company manufactured products to meet the demand for modern and contemporary urban housing. It had the first tunnel kilns in the country that could produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered the use of automation to control production, which allows for more efficiency and consistency.
The company began expanding its operations overseas in the latter part of the 1980s to take advantage of new markets and sales opportunities. It created the Cera Trading Company, importing and selling other products from other manufacturers to complement its own range of plumbing fittings and sanitary earthenware. This strategy helped increase sales and expand the market share of the company globally.
In the late 1990s, Toto had shifted its focus on research and development for household appliances that are water-related. It also redesigned its system of distribution to better serve customers and increase profit. The company employed the same just-in-time approach to its supply chain management and sales program. This led to a higher level customer satisfaction.
Toto continued to innovate toilet technology. Its latest toilet, for example it has a strong tornado flush that is more environmentally green than traditional toilets. The company also makes use of recycled water in its manufacturing process and has a green procurement policy. Toto also produces bathtubs, faucets,
