What is Pragmatism?
People who are pragmatic prefer solutions and actions that are likely to work in the real world. They don't get entangled in idealistic theories which may not be practical in reality.
This article explores three methodological principles of pragmatic inquiry. It also provides two project examples on the organizational processes of non-governmental organizations. It suggests that pragmatic approach is an effective research method to study the dynamic processes.
It's an attitude
Pragmatic thinking is a method to solve problems that focuses on the practical consequences and outcomes. It prioritizes practical results over the beliefs, feelings and moral tenets. This approach produced a distinctive epistemological perspective which was a fallibilist and anti-Cartesian explanation of the rules that govern inquiry. James and Dewey for instance were defenders of a pluralistic alethic view of truth.
As the Deweyan era waned and analytic thought grew in the midst of analytic philosophy, many pragmatists abandoned the label. However, some pragmatists continued develop their philosophy, such as George Herbert Mead (who contributed to feminist feminism) and Dorothy Parker Follett (who considered the organization as an operation). Some pragmatists were focused on realism in its broadest sense - whether it was a scientific realism founded on the monism of truth (following Peirce) or a more generalized alethic pluralitism (following James & Dewey).
The current movement of pragmatics is growing worldwide. There are pragmatists from Europe, America and Asia who are interested in a wide range of subjects, from Native American philosophy to environmental sustainability. The pragmatics are also involved in meta-ethics, and have created a compelling argument for a brand new model of ethics. Their argument is that morality is not founded on principles, but on an intelligent and practical method of making rules.
