imageBest Coffee Espresso Machines

Turn the knob, press the button, and a delicious beverage is in your hand. This machine won't win any beauty contests but it can make a wonderful cup of espresso. Our testers found that the flavor was more like coffee than other machines.

It also requires more work to use than other models we've reviewed. But, it's worth the effort for the hands-off Java fan.

1. Nespresso Vertuo Plus

The Nespresso Vertuo Plus is the most efficient Nespresso machine to buy when you're seeking consistency and efficiency. The Vertuo Plus has a minimalist design that blends with your kitchen decor and is easy to use. Simply place a capsule in and press brew to enjoy your beverage. The machine automatically adjusts brewing parameters to maximize extraction depending on the barcode in the capsule. This is a major benefit for Nespresso Vertuo, as you don't need to worry about adjusting different temperatures or pressures for every type. However, it does limit your options to Nespresso pods, and doesn't have an inbuilt milk frother.

The Vertuo Plus uses Nespresso's Centrifusion technology to create a rich, smooth crema. The machine spins at 7000rpm in order to extract all the flavors and aromas from each capsule. It also heats and dispensates water at the same time, allowing you to make American drip coffee or espresso.

imageThe Vertuo Plus is cheaper than the Creatista Pro, which makes it a great choice for those who want a basic upgrade to their current Nespresso experience. It also comes with a smaller 40-ounce water tank, in comparison to the premium model's 60 ounce tank. This being said, if you're planning on making large drinks frequently or sharing with guests, the premium model may be a better choice.

2. Barista Express Impress

The Barista Express Impress from Breville is a machine with a a premium look and many useful features. Its intelligent dosing system and assisted tamping help novices automatize elements of the process making it much easier to make a great espresso. It also allows small adjustments to the temperature of the water that baristas with more experience will appreciate as even a couple of degrees can change the flavor of the coffee machines espresso.

The machine features a high-end, conical burr grinder that provides 25 grind settings to fit any type of coffee. The machine also comes with a stainless-steel milk jug, as well with double-wall and single-wall filter baskets for one and two-cup sizes. The frothing arm can be used to create micro-foam in cappuccinos or lattes.

The interface of the espresso machine is easy to use and clearly explains each step. We also liked that the machine doesn't include many plastic parts and looks quite durable. It's not inexpensive, but it's a well-built and feature-packed machine that will last for years to be. It comes with a great warranty that covers mechanical issues up to a year after the date of purchase. This is pretty impressive for a machine of this value. If you're interested in making espresso machine coffee regularly, it's well worth the investment.

3. Gaggia Classic

Gaggia's Classic first came out in 1991, and quickly gained an cult following due to its simplicity style and - of course – its ability to brew a tasty espresso. It is back better than ever with the brand new Classic Pro. While the Classic Pro isn't as advanced as other entry-level machines it is still capable of serving espresso of a cafe quality using the top-of-the-line portafilter and group. However as it's a single boiler, you can't brew and steam at the same time and you'll have to wait a while between brewing a shot.

The Classic Pro has a sleek industrial design and a feel that is elegant and sturdy in your hand. It comes with simple switches to turn it off/on, and to brew/steam, with indicators. The frame and switches of the Classic Pro are more durable, resulting in it an excellent feel.

In terms of accessories the Classic Pro doesn't come with much, except for the commercial-standard portafilter of 58 millimeters and the plastic tamper are nice touch. A 3-way solenoid is also a great addition. It reduces pressure fluctuations and helps get rid of the sloppy cheap espresso machine pucks that cheaper machines can't do. Gaggia also added a steam wand which does well at frothing milk used in latte arts.

This is a combination coffee and espresso maker that can make up to two cups of coffee at the same time. It has a dual heating system that allows you to brew both drip and espresso simultaneously. This is a great feature for parties because you can serve your guests their preferred drinks simultaneously.
