Turn Back, the band's third studio album is an attempt to return to the traditional sextet style, and an even more consistent and powerful effort with a harder edge. The edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the development of the group. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing ability to play was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard work was also sharper, more complex, and less derivative on previous recordings.
After touring to promote their album, the group recorded an Amsterdam live show which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between.
