About Toto
The band Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also acclaimed studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs at the time) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The name comes from the Latin word that means "all encompassing," the group was intent on exploring all styles of music.
In 1981 Toto's third album Turn Back is a failure, but they rebound with their fourth release Isolation with two hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour make them a household name around the world.
After a gap of couple of years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in the year 1986. The album is a departure from the ballads on previous albums, and features some heavy rock. The album was their first to be certified platinum in North America.
In the course of recording the fifth album, the group loses its manager and is faced with financial problems. They decide to change their name and create a new album with an entirely new producer. Lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen leaves the band and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is a more natural frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much-needed boost.
In 1999, the band releases Mindfields and embarks on an extensive worldwide tour. After a few months in Europe they travel to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief break, Toto resumes recording and continues to record their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes an original cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band performing their hit song Africa during the recent tour. Toto's touring lineup is completed by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
