About Toto
Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also famous studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. Taking their name from the Latin word that means "all encompassing," the group was intent on exploring every musical style.
The third album by Toto, Turn Back, was a failure in 1981. However, they bounced back with their fourth album, Isolation, which contained two hit songs, including the title song and Roseanna. The album and tour helped them become a household name all over the world.
After a short hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. The album is different from the ballads that were featured on previous albums, and also features some heavy rock. This was their first platinum album in North America.
During the recording process for the fifth album the group loses their manager and faces financial difficulties. They decide to change their name and create a new album with a new producer. Lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen is let go and replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman, and gives the band a much-needed boost.
The band released Mindfields in 1999 and embarks on a massive worldwide tour. After a few weeks in Europe The band then travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and begins recording their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes an original cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band performing their hit song Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring band includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest, as well as keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.
