Origins
Toto's early history, which began in 1917, was a reflection of Japan's rapid economic growth. In the beginning, Toto manufactured products to meet the demands for modern, brand new urban housing. It was the first tunnel kiln in the country that could produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered automation to allow production control, which helps to increase efficiency and consistency.
In the late 1980s, the company began to expand overseas to profit from sales and new markets. The company founded the Cera Trading Company to import and sell other products from other manufacturers in order to expand its line of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy increased sales and expanded the firm's market share in the world.
In the 1990s, Toto had shifted its emphasis on research and development of household appliances that are water-related. It also upgraded its system of distribution to better serve customers and improve profit. The company also employed the just-in-time approach to its supply chain management and sales program. This led to a higher level of customer satisfaction.

Before forming Toto members of the group performed session work for various musicians. Keyboardist David Paich, drummer Jeff Porcaro and guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather all performed on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. They also appeared on records by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.
Discography
You would expect a group with a name such as Asia to be a prog rock band however it's actually a fairly straight forward rock band. The band was initially four members and released two albums: 1979's self-titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. Although the band have a variety of musical backgrounds their biggest breakthrough was in 1982 with Toto IV.
The album was a huge blockbuster, however it did not come without its own set of issues. Luckily for Toto they delivered with the assistance of the smash single "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery is a result of their previous experiences. Before joining the group, the members were session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their distinctive sound has since become the standard for pop music from the 1980s, and has influenced many contemporary artists.
The album opens with a strong and pounding sound with tracks like Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write great AOR songs that slowly build their hooks into your. The album also contains jazzier, slower tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album closes with Great Expectations, a song which combines folk and distorted AOR and should sound completely wrong, but actually works wonderfully well.
After Toto IV, the band's fortunes started to plummet. David Hungate left the band 토토 꽁머니 (
Kingranks.com) to focus on his solo career and the band had several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in the after he was charged with drug abuse. the group continued to perform as a trio with Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Line-up
Turn Back, the band's third studio album it was a return to a classic sextet format, and it was a more consistent, more powerful album with a sharper edge. The more experimental sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the maturation in the group. Bobby Kimball's growing virtuosity was reflected by the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard skills were also more sophisticated, sharper and less akin to previous efforts.
After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live show in Amsterdam that was released as a set of two CDs called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. A new studio album was released shortly after, and the group embarked on a long-distance tour to promote the album. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to find songs that hadn't been recorded before. The album was released as a double-album titled Then and Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band that did not include a single song with the word "A" in its title and it included one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".
