imageThe facelifted fifth generation Ibiza is a contender in the crowded supermini segment. It competes against the Renault Clio and Peugeot 208 as well as the Ford Fiesta.

With a thumb nail, or a small flat head screwdriver (A) to lift up the key fob battery compartment cover (B). Replace the CR2025 battery, making sure it is installed in the correct direction.

Dead Coin Battery

A dead battery on a coin is the most common cause of a key fob that isn't locking or unlocking your car. It is likely to show indications before it dies, like a decrease in range or no power at all. It is easy to replace it with a new (CR2025) one from a local retailer. You should be aware that using the wrong or incompatible batteries can damage your key fob. Make sure the battery you replace is the same size and voltage and that it is the same specifications.

If your device has been exposed to clean water, such as rainwater or soapy tap water it is possible that corrosion has damaged the chip's electronic circuit. You can clean the chip with isopropyl or electronic cleaners to see if this helps, but that the chip has been damaged.

The most efficient solution is to buy a new key fob. They are available at most major car dealers and are fitted by an experienced mechanic. You can also purchase them online, for example on eBay. It is best to work on a surface that has adequate lighting. It is much easier to work on the smaller parts. You'll also be able to avoid putting things in the wrong place. Always work on your key fob in an area that is safe and secure.

Water Damage

You may think your key fob is ruined if you drop it into a pool or accidentally wash it. But there's still hope. When the circuit board in the fob is exposed to water, it transforms into conductor that shorts the components. It also increases corrosion and rust.

This is a simple solution. Simply locate something absorbent and put it inside the fob. A paper towl or tissue works well. Make use of a cotton swab and isopropyl to clean the circuit board and any other components. Allow the circuit board to air dry in a dry, warm environment for a few weeks.

Replace the battery after the fob has dried with a new one with the same size and the same polarity ('+' (pointing upwards). It is a challenge to open the fob in order to access the battery but if you have a small flat-head screwdriver at hand, it will slide in easily. Once the fob has been rebuilt, it should operate just as normal. If it doesn't, then you'll need to reprogramme it or replace the receiver module.

Radio Interference

When a keyfob operates properly, it transmits the radio frequency which is received by a module in your car. However, if the signal is distorted in some way the key fob will not perform as it should. This could be due to factors like weather conditions, objects, or other transmitters operating in the same frequency range near your car.

This could cause your key fob to not activate the vehicle's functions like the ignition switch or the security system. In this scenario it's best to replace the battery inside your key fob.

A few LED lights that are aftermarket and utilizes the same frequency as a remote key fob can interfere with the signal and stop it from reaching the receiver modules. The LED lighting must be switched off or changed to a different frequency in order to prevent interference.

If the issue persists after replacing the battery, the antenna of your key fob may be damaged or not functioning properly. The antenna is responsible to transmit a signal between the key fob and the receiver module. An OBDII scan can assist in diagnosing the issue by revealing what's wrong with the system. The scanner will ask to provide information about your vehicle including the model, make, engine type and VIN number.

Faulty Receiver Module

The key fob features a receiver module that sends signals to lock and unlock the key fob. If this module is damaged that causes it to fail, the entire onboard electronics will stop working. Reprogramming the key fob with an OBDII scan or replacing it can help.

This problem can be caused by a dead coin-cell or a water damage or signal interference. You can reset your on-board computer by disconnecting the 12 volt batteries for 15 minutes. This will flush out any residual electrical energy that could be causing problems. The cable should be removed first from the negative terminal, then from the positive terminal. After 15 minutes, you can reconnect your battery in reverse order. Positive first, then negative the next.

The internal chip of the key fob could be damaged by water or dirt. If your key stopped working after getting wet, wash the electronic component with isopropyl alcohol or an electronics cleaner before reinstalling the battery. If your key has stopped working after being exposed to soapy or salted water, it is likely that the chip has become damaged and needs to be replaced.

Another possibility is an inoperable antenna module fuse that is sending the lock / unlock signal to the vehicle. The fuse could be found in various places, based on the type of vehicle. For example it could be under the rear seat leon car key or trunk, or the side of the dashboard.
