These systems utilize radio waves that are generated by your vehicle, and then picked up by the receiver in the key fob. There are many manufacturers that have systems to warn you if the key is nearing running out, but they're not foolproof.
Transponder Keys
Transponder keys (also called chip keys) are among the most well-known types of car keys. They operate by using an embedded microchip in the head of plastic. The microchip sends a low-level signal to the car's receiver that only matches up with the digital serial number programmed into it by the manufacturer. The system utilizes LF (low frequency 125 kHz) transmitting antennas inside and outside the vehicle which communicate with the smart key. The key will transmit its unique ID to the car if it is close enough to trigger an antenna. The PASE module then confirms the key and turns off the immobilizer, which allows the vehicle to start.
