Mesothelioma and Asbestos

asbestos case exposure. It is estimated that only 300-500 cases are diagnosed each year, which is less than pleural asbestosis.
As with pleural asbestosis, symptoms can take a long time to show. Patients generally suffer from abdominal pain and could also experience a mass in their abdomen. This kind of mesothelioma can also cause nausea, weight loss, and fever. Many of these symptoms could be mistaken for gastrointestinal problems and can lead to a false diagnosis.

Risk Factors

Smoking can increase the likelihood of getting mesothelioma because it causes mesothelium damage and makes it more prone to asbestos. In addition, mesothelioma may be caused by certain illnesses, such as asbestosis and pneumonia. It is also important to note that mesothelioma is more prevalent in males than females. This is due to men being more likely to work with asbestos (

Additionally, men are more likely to live with someone who has was exposed to asbestos and bring asbestos fibers that have escaped home on their clothing. Diagnosis
Mesothelioma is difficult to recognize because the symptoms can be similar to other diseases. This can result in patients being wrongly diagnosed.
The first step in identifying mesothelioma is for NYU Langone doctors to perform an examination and write notes on the medical history of a patient including asbestos exposure. Doctors will also recommend a CT scan or chest X-ray in order to look for abnormalities, lumps and evidence of exposure to asbestos. These include pleural plaques, thickened pleura and calcium deposits.
Other diagnostic tests include a magnetic resonance image or MRI test, which uses magnets and radio waves to create a series detailed images of inside the body. Another way for doctors to detect mesothelioma is to perform an operation called a biopsy. In a surgical biopsy doctors remove a small piece of tissue from the peritoneum or pleura to conduct further tests. A pathologist can examine the tissue under microscopes to determine if it is contaminated with cancerous cells.
The mesothelial type involved as well as the benign or malignant nature of these cells and the location and stage of the cancer are used to classify the disease.
