About Toto
Toto was founded in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also acclaimed studio players working with Boz Scaggs) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The group's name was derived from the Latin word that translates to "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore all styles of music.
The third album by Toto, Turn Back, was a failure in 1981. However they made amends with their fourth release, Isolation, which contained two hit songs with the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour make them a household name around the world.
After a brief hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. It's a change from the ballads of previous albums and features some heavy rock. This album was their first to be certified platinum in North America.
When they record the band's fifth album, the band loses their manager and are financially in trouble. They decide to record a brand new album and change their name to a different producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen is let go and replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is more natural as a frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much-needed boost.
The band releases Mindfields in 1999 and embarks on a massive worldwide tour. After a few months in Europe they come to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and releases their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993. This includes a cover version of Weezer’s song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's coverage of Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring band is rounded out by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
