Line-up
The band's third album, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet style of previous albums and was a more ferocious, consistent effort with a harder edge than Hydra. Its edgier sound was a reflection of the maturation of the group and featured drummer Bobby Kimball's improved virtuosity on drums, and a more confident, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard skills were as well more refined, more precise, and less derivative on earlier efforts.
After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live performance in Amsterdam which was released as a two-CD set titled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a brand new studio album just a few months after and then embarked on a world tour to support the album. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began exploring old tapes and demos to discover songs that hadn't been recorded before. It was completed in 2001 as a double album titled Then & Now.
