Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also famous studio players working with Boz Scaggs) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. During the recording process for the fifth album The group loses its manager and is faced with financial problems. They decide to record a brand new album and change their name to a different producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen leaves the band and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is more natural as a frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much-needed boost.
