This week’s newsletter requests testing of the her latest blog release candidates for Bitcoin Core and LND, describes how helping people accept payments to bech32 addresses can lower fees, and lists notable code changes in popular Bitcoin projects. No notable technical news this week. Ordinary folks believe that cryptocurrencies and blockchain are only for technical and finance professionals. Note: When we at Optech started this newsletter, we decided to avoid stuffing short newsletters with fluff pieces and other unnecessary information, so newsletter length varies depending on the actual amount of significant technical news each week. Applying the same logic to attract traders doing Bitcoin trading, a number of brokerage firms have started offering Bitcoin binary options. Binance certainly offers a wider range of assets for trading, though Coinbase may be the more established exchange. Notwithstanding what there are certain kinds of trades for which Bitcoins are the only form of payment that is widely accepted. It currently contains 111114 bitcoins. ● C-Lightning 0.7.1 released: this new version contains new plugins and RPCs as well as numerous improvements to its handling of the channel gossip protocol that reduce the use of memory and bandwidth. ● Help test LND 0.6-beta RC4: release candidates for the next major version of LND are being published. Additionally, some take huge amounts of energy for the miners, so some coins like IOTA or Chia pride themselves on being energy efficient. The system still requires the buyer trust the merchant, as the merchant could deliver encrypted junk instead of the actual data (i.e., this proposal isn’t trustless like a zero-knowledge contingent payment), but the proposed protocol can allow the buyer to begin downloading data while the payment is still being processed. ● Help test Bitcoin Core 0.18.0 release candidates: Bitcoin Core’s third RC for its next major version is available and a fourth is being prepared. Switching to native segwit in order to reduce a transaction’s weight allows you to reduce its fee by the same percentage without changing how long it’ll take to confirm-all other things being equal. The only solutions, besides wallets abandoning message signing support, are for wallet developers to agree on a standard and then widely implement it. This new feature is especially useful for hardware wallets and other paired wallets as it makes it possible to add HD key-path information to the PSBTs so that wallets asked to sign a PSBT can easily derive the keys needed for signing or verify that a change output does indeed pay back into the wallet. That means message signing today is universally limited to users of single-sig addresses. This means more people spending native segwit inputs lowers the fee not just for those spenders but for everyone who creates transactions-including wallets and services that support sending to bech32 addresses. These sites and services may have their own privacy policies and their own rules of customer service. Ensure that you received the funds by checking either the wallet you used to create the addresses or a block explorer. ● LND 0.7.0-beta released: this new major version is the first to contain a watchtower implementation that allows third parties to help defend the in-channel funds of offline users. ● Standardized atomic data delivery following LN payments: Nadav Kohen posted a proposal to the Lightning-Dev mailing list for a standardized way to deliver data paid for via LN, the same method already used on Alex Bosworth’s Y’alls site. The advantage of this method is that it allows the spender to prevent a payment from succeeding up until the last moment, allowing them to unilaterally cancel stuck payments or even try sending the same payment over multiple routes simultaneously to see which succeeds the fastest (before canceling the slower payments).
