Amazon Prime Video is rolling out user profiles for family members and friends who share Prime accounts, the company announced today. Each account will allow for up to six user profiles. One profile will default as the primary account, with five additional profiles allowed. These can be regular accounts or kids accounts. The kids account will restrict what type of content is shown, similar to how other children’s accounts on streaming services like Netflix and HBO Max work. People can stream up to three videos at once while using the same Amazon account, with no more than two devices streaming the same video at the same time. Profiles are linked through Amazon’s wallet-sharing tool. The feature allows customers to share their payment methods with another Amazon account that has set up a household.


Amazon Prime Video will automatically create linked accounts from the default profile to others that exist in the household. Similar to personalized profiles on other streaming services, Amazon’s user profiles will tailor to each individual’s interests. That means each profile will include separate recommendations, progress on seasons being watched, and a watchlist based on profile activity, according to Amazon. Unlike Netflix and Disney Plus, it doesn’t appear that Prime Video customers will be able to customize the look of their profile icons with images from shows and movies. This is important to note: for customers who use Amazon Household and don’t want to share profiles with other Household accounts, customers can disable the feature from the "manage your profiles" page. Once profile sharing is turned off, however, customers will not be able to turn the feature back on. So be sure about disabling it before you do so. Customers will be able to create and manage profiles with the Android and iOS versions of the Prime Video app, via the web, on 10th-generation or higher Fire tablets, through the Prime Video app for Fire TV, and "select living room devices such as the playstation (gamingdeals.shop) 4," at launch, according to Amazon. The feature is rolling out globally but will do so in phases, so not all customers will see the user profile options immediately.

Prime Day 2021 fell less than a year after the 2020 sales event, which contributed to the slowdown in growth from 45.1% earlier in the pandemic. Amazon postponed Prime Day 2020, pushing it from its usual summer time slot to mid-October because of the coronavirus. As the event evolved, Prime Day turned into a highly anticipated summer sale designed to drum up more business for Amazon - and the retailer’s marketplace sellers - before the holiday shopping season. In recent years, other large retailers have offered promotions on their own websites around Prime Day to take advantage of the additional online shopping traffic from deal-seeking consumers. The inaugural Prime Day lasted for 24 hours and encompassed nine countries including the U.S. In 2017, the sale was extended for 30 hours and expanded to a few more markets, and in 2018, Prime Day was a 36-hour event. By 2019, Amazon began running its current two-day sale spanning 18 countries. And this year, there were more than 20 markets participating. With discounts available only to paying members, Prime Day also is a vehicle for Amazon to sign up more consumers for its popular loyalty plan. Amazon reported it has more than 200 million Prime members worldwide in its annual shareholders letter, published in April. That’s up from 150 million global Prime members in January 2020 and 100 million in April 2018. However, the company doesn’t break out U.S. Market research firm Consumer Intelligence Research Partners LLC, or CIRP, estimates there were 172 million Prime members in the U.S. 2021, up from 142 million a year earlier. CIRP’s membership estimates are based on quarterly surveys of 500 consumers. This year, Amazon launched a "Prime Stampcard" game to motivate existing members to explore - and hopefully get hooked on - more of their Prime benefits. Members had to complete the following activities to earn each of the four required stamps: make a Prime shipping-eligible purchase, stream Prime Video, listen to Prime Music, and access a Prime Reading or Kindle Unlimited book.
