Tom Watson has called on all men in their fifties to get tested for prostate cancer after revealing 'the fear of imminent death was overwhelming' as he battled with the disease.

The former Labour deputy leader, 57, Expérience KetoXplode revealed yesterday he was diagnosed with the illness last June and was immediately forced to 'grapple with fears of dying'.

Making the shocking revelation in an email newsletter on the eve of his birthday, Lord Watson revealed how 'the night I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, my world seemed to tilt'.

'That word 'cancer' - it truly did me in,' he added. 'I grappled with fears of dying, sexual dysfunction, and even the prospect of wearing nappies before turning 60. My life took a turn; I grew closer to my children and rewrote my will.'

The Labour big beast said thankfully his treatment had been successful and scans in November showed no trace of cancer but issued a stark warning to men of a similar age.

Lord Watson (pictured after being made deputy leader in 2015) has now been given the all-clear following a successful treatment programme

The peer said the 'worst of it' was the month-long 'waiting period' before he knew how aggressive his cancer was.

He said: 'Knowing I had prostate cancer but not its aggressiveness was a month-long ordeal. Despite knowing the low risk, the fear of imminent death was overwhelming. '
