1. Neato Botvac D4
This Neato is an excellent choice if you want to benefit from the convenience of a robotic vacuum cleaner but not sacrifice a lot in terms of performance. The D4 is an excellent choice for those looking for an automated vacuum that comes with many features. It has nifty navigation and mapping tools as well as smart home integration. It also comes with an easy to use app.
To set up this bot, you must plug it into its base and connect it to your Wi-Fi network at home. After that it will launch the Neato app will guide you through the initial configuration (linking to Wi-Fi, giving the D4, etc.). After it's fully charged you can begin the cleaning process.
Once the D4 is running it lets you create a schedule either automatically or manually at any point. You can also make use of your voice to control it via Google Home or Amazon Alexa. If you have an Apple Watch you can start cleaning by tapping your wrist.
This model performed well in our lab tests of both carpeted and hard floors, capturing 91.3% combined of debris from serpentine pathways. However, it's not as great at edge and corner cleaning as other models. The side sensors keep the D4 about 1.5 inches from walls. It also lacks the side-sweeping brush on all, if not the cheapest robotic cleaners. Additionally, its elevated turret isn't able to fit under low-clearance furniture. It does support virtual No-Go Lines so you can draw lines on your floor plan to inform the D4 not to go there. The battery life of 75 minutes is about average, too. However, that's a minor sacrifice for all the convenience this model offers.
2. iRobot Roomba 980
The Roomba model from iRobot is the most popular robot of the company, with top performance and connected features. The 980 retails at PS899/$899 but it's typically cheaper if you shop around on the internet (John Lewis or Amazon US are both good places to begin).
The 980 is the most advanced of all our top picks. It comes with a HEPA filter which can trap micronized dust and allergens to improve the air quality inside your home. It is also compatible with a variety of flooring types such as tiles and hardwoods.
The 980's top-mounted camera SLAM sensor, and the ability to navigate through narrow spaces such as hallways and corners is one of its most prominent features. iRobot refers to this technology as iAdapt 2.0 and it utilizes images taken by the camera in order to create an internal map. This helps the 980 to keep track of where it's been, so it doesn't waste time cleaning areas that have already been covered.
iRobot also added new features that are smarter, such as a spot clean function that lets you mark the area of your home as off-limits to the 980. This was not the most advanced or largest that we tested, but it was a success and is a welcome feature. The 980 is controlled via voice commands via Alexa or Google Assistant. However, granting commands isn't immediate; the
lidar robot vacuums can send a queued request, which could take up to a few minutes to complete.
The Roomba 980 can also automatically return to its base station when it's done with its cleaning job, ensuring that it's always ready for its next adventure. This feature is only available on the 980 model, and it's a nice addition that makes the otherwise fairly expensive machine more practical to own.
3. iRobot Roomba 985
iRobot Roomba 985 is a product designed to help you keep your floors clean and beautiful, with its powerful cleaning capabilities, smart navigation, and intelligent integration with other iRobot products. Its patented dirt detection system alerts you to areas that need extra attention, and also includes smart sensors that keep it away from steps and other potentially dangerous obstacles. It can also automatically recharge and continue cleaning until the job has been completed. Its intelligent mapping and vSLAM technology lets it navigate an entire level of your home, and keep the track of where it's been and what rooms it's yet to clean.
Its low-profile design allows it to go under carpets, furniture, and other objects where pet hair and dust are often hidden. In contrast to other robot vacuums, it is also able to clean up dirt in corners and along edges. It's also easy to schedule cleaning sessions from anywhere with the iRobot app or your voice using Alexa and Google Assistant.
The iRobot Roomba 985 uses the most durable lithium-ion batteries that charge faster and last longer than other brands. The battery comes with 12 months of warranty and is guaranteed to perform under standard operating conditions. Its high-impact ABS and polycarbonate plastic construction offers strength. Gold contacts, coupled with resistance welding and a durable circuitry ensure long-term reliability.
4. iRobot Roomba 990
The latest iRobot model has the best obstacle-avoidance performance of any Roomba that we have evaluated, thanks to its front camera and laser sensor. This enables it to avoid wires and pet feces better than the Roborock S6 MaxV, Ecovacs N8 Pro, as well as other robotic vacuums that we've tested.
It's also iRobot's most powerful vacuum. It can grab the dirt that has deeper particles or larger pet hairs, unlike other mid-range models, such as the Roomba 960. This is due to the cleaner's wider counter-rotating brushes as well as a more powerful motor that can pull more suction power.
The Roomba 995 is also iRobot's lowest-cost vacuum, with recharge and resume features, but it doesn't come with the auto-empty feature that the I6+ and I7 offer. It lacks iAdapt navigation 2.0 and the camera utilized by the I7 to track objects and avoid obstructions. It can't access features like in-app containment, or save maps.
Another downside is that the iRobot-995 doesn't have mopping capabilities. This might not be an issue if you're just looking for a top-quality vacuum, but it is an important disadvantage for anyone considering buying the hybrid robot.
The other iRobot with automatic-empty is the Combo J7+, which can be used to mop and vacuum. It has the same navigation system as the I6+ or I7, however, it doesn't have iAdapt 2.0. It doesn't save any maps and doesn't offer the same options for app-based containment like the I7 or S9. The Combo J7+ does, however have improved automation thanks to iRobot Genius and can learn your cleaning habits to plan cleaning schedules automatically. It also has a larger dust bin than I6+ or I7. It can hold 2.5 liters that is enough for 60 days.
5. Roomba 960 from iRobot
The 960 is a much less expensive alternative to 980. It delivers similar performance, but in a smaller package. It is great for floors that are carpeted or bare as it picks up dirt and food crumbs. And it's excellent in navigating and avoiding obstacles. It also does a decent job cleaning embedded dirt.
This robot utilizes iAdapt navigation 2.0 to track its position. This lets it navigate through the space with ease and avoid getting trapped. The top-mounted camera and SLAM combine to let it see the floor and objects, allowing it to easily avoid furniture legs and other obstacles. It can even be placed under tables and couches because of its low profile. It's also able to return to its dock to recharge when necessary.
