Lagercrantz said: 'In a year where muscular dogs have been at the centre of much publicity, our message to prospective owners of how much care and management these breeds require has been getting through to consumers.
So intense has the value of dogs become that breeders are introducing extra security measures to prevent theft, and adoption centres have stopped advertising their animals online to deter profit-seeking middle men from getting them.
'We have been proactive for many years on our site in advising the needs of these breeds and the careful management of their temperament. We have seen a decline in the purchase of such dogs across the board.'
'There is a lot of greed in the world and with groodles now being a highly sought after dog, their prices being something people are paying, there is more concern around theft than ever before,' Mrs Wilkinson said.
