1. Smeg BCC02

Designed by Milan-based firm Deep Design, this sleek, compact machine blends the brand's inimitable retro style with modern technology. It handles every step of the coffee-making process, from grinding beans and then tamping them into a puck, to making milk into a texturing process and dispenses the correct amount of coffee - meaning you can create barista-quality hot drinks by pressing a button.

The machine also has an elegant brushed aluminium front and is available in red, black or taupe, so it'll easily fit into most kitchen designs. The machine is not without faults however. The majority of reviewers thought it was quite expensive for a cup-to- bean maker (and it doesn't come with the milk pitcher).

There were numerous glowing reviews of this machine's ease of use as well as the quality of its coffee. The intuitive digital display provides step-by-step guidance and feedback throughout the coffee making process, helping you make your drink perfect each time. It will even alert you to tweak the grind size if it's not exactly right. It's like having a personal barista at home (minus Elon Musk's rocket building abilities and Harry Potter's invisibility cape).

If you prefer drinks with milk this model comes with a steam wand that's adjustable in both directions to accommodate all drinking vessels, but not a Viking's drinking horn. We were impressed by the speed and efficiency of the frothing process, as well. It makes an amazing, full-flavoured espresso with a wonderful crema.

The BCC02 is an excellent all-rounder. It's quiet and efficient, and is a great value with its current price of PS499. The only problem is that it does not offer the same level customisation as other bean-to-cup machines that we have tested. It has a pump that is 15 bars instead of the standard 19 bars. This is not enough for producing top-quality espressos. But other than that it's a great bean to cup machine for those who like their coffee strong and dark. Barista TS smart is covered by a two-year guarantee. This is a greater warranty than the typical one-year warranty. It's a mark of confidence on behalf of the manufacturer.
