Replacement Upvc Window Handles
Almost all replacement window handles made of upvc include everything you require to complete the task. However, if the old handle had screws or pins that held it in place, they must be removed. Remove the'snap-in' covers at the base of your handle.
The next step is to identify what type of window lock and handle you are replacing. This is vital!
Espag
Espag handles are a system of multipoint locks that are fitted to casement window types such as uPVC or wooden
double glazing window replacement glazing. The handle is fitted with a 7mm square shaft that fits into a gearbox on the uPVC window. When the handle is turned it activates a series locks around the window's perimeter. Espag handles are also referred to as shootbolt handles. They provide additional security when compared to the conventional single point lock found on older frames.
They are available in a number of different styles, such as inline and cranked handle designs that can be used in left or right-hand operation. You can also find ergonomic handles that enhance the appearance and feel of your window, as well as the handle.
If you are looking to replace your existing uPVC window handle with an espag handle, you will have to determine the size of the spindle that is installed and measure the measurement from the base of the handle in order to order the correct replacement. This measurement is referred to as step height and can help you find the perfect uPVC handle for your home.
If you need to remove any screws that are holding the handle, you can use pliers or a screwdriver. Once this is done, you will need to disassemble the handle by taking off the screws or pins that hold the spindle and then taking it away from the window.
When you have the handle removed, you will then be in a position to access the locking mechanism inside the frame of the window and take out the cockspur wedge block that is placed next to the handle, allowing the window to open. The
replacement uPVC window handles that you've purchased should be able to fit on the cockspur wedge block, and then into the spindle of the handle which will allow the window to open once again. If you want to make sure that your uPVC handles are securely secured, it's best to replace the cockspur block a brand new one.
Cockspur
Cockspur handles are found on older uPVC or aluminium windows. The handle is closed and rotates onto a wedge-shaped plastic receiver catch. (Not to be confused with timber latches which are also covered in this section.) They can be locked or non-lockable. They are available in different nose heights that can be adjusted to the frame.
The handle is locked by the small triangle-shaped spur (spur) which is fixed to the frame. They are typically one-way handles, but a deadlock with a locking mechanism can be fitted to provide additional security.
Similar to Espag handles, replacement handles for cockspur handles are simple to install All you require is an additional set of screws (supplied) and the proper backset. The backset is the distance from the baseplate of the window to the underside of the handle's nose. In general Aluminium window frames usually use a 9mm backset while UPVC utilizes 21mm. There are many other variations however it is essential to take a measurement before buying the handle (see the video below for more details on how).
The spindle or,
Replacement Upvc Window Handles in some cases the entire handle assembly is removed by unwinding the handle. The new handle is screwed in place by using a pair of pozidrivs screws. The pozidriv screws come in either zinc or brass finishes to match the hardware. There is also the option of a self-locking version.
This cockspur handle is easy to install and is ideal to replace or repair old uPVC Windows. They are a universal design that makes them suitable for all backsets and profiles. Each handle has three packers, each with different thicknesses. These are neatly installed on the underside of the handle noses and can be combined to make backsets as tiny as 9, 13mm, or as big as 21mm. These handles are available in both left and right-handed models, and in locks and non-lockable versions. They are also available with a variety of nose heights.
Tilt and Turn
The most prestigious European window style with tilt and turn has been in use in Europe for a long time, but it's just now beginning to gain popularity in the United States. They combine the functionality of three window styles into one: tilt, pivot and in-swing. This makes them suitable for older homes as they can be used to provide more ventilation than standard window types.
When tilt and turn windows are closed, they will lock as any other fixed window. By turning the handle 90@ or 180@, depending on the type of tilt-and-turn window the sash opens to the outside and the window will tilt inwards to allow air to circulate. This is an excellent way to let air circulate without having to open the large, potentially dangerous window.
If the handle is turned 90@ or 180@ the sash can be fully opened as doors. This permits complete air exchange which is especially beneficial for rooms that are smoky or where smells or smoke can accumulate. This allows you to easily clean the glass's exterior, as you can do it from inside your home. This is a task that often requires a lot of risk.
Tilt and turn windows are extremely secure. They are extremely difficult to open when locked in closed position. They also have double seals that stop rainwater from entering your home while it is in the tilted position or in swing. This is a beneficial feature for older homes where burglars are more likely to target traditional windows that are opened from the side hinges.
Spade
There are several different types of handles that are able to be fitted on double-glazed windows made of upvc. There are two main kinds of handles: Cockspur and Espag. Other options include tilt and turn handles as well as blade or spade handles, monkey tail handles and a variety of other kinds. The kind of handle you pick will depend on your preference and the kind of windows you have.
To choose the right replacement upvc window handle, it is important to know how your current handle is fixed to the frame. This is known as handing. It is a vital piece of information, especially when shopping online, as certain handles aren't suitable for all windows. For instance, some handles are angled whilst others are straight and turn left or right. It is also important to be aware of what the spindle length is that is the distance from the base of the handle to the head of the handle.
Identifying if your windows require a restrictor is also crucial when selecting the correct handle. These are usually used in high-rise flats or commercial buildings, but they're not a requirement for homes that are mostly domestic. Also, consider step height which is the distance from the bottom of the screw plate to the nose of the handle.
Spade is a word that comes from Old English spadu or spaedu and has been translated in many languages including German spaten and Low German Spathen. During the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s in New York City the word spade was used to mock black people. Since the time, the word has become an emblem of African American pride and heritage.
When replacing a Cadenza style handle, it's crucial that you get the right size. The handles are available in straight and angled designs that differ by a few millimetres. The handle head can vary between a D and a T shape, or be without handles at all.
