I happen to live quite near the border between England and Wales, and I can see how the newspapers are attempting, in many cases very successfully, to serve both communities—the English community on the one side of the border and the Welsh community on the other. They are doing a great deal to keep alive Welsh traditions by their interest in the Welsh point of view. It would be a great disaster if some of these papers ceased to function. From that point of view I am particularly interested in the future development of these local papers. Gentleman demonstrated in his speech that this is a problem which cannot be cured by wave of the wand.
Each group of dryers will use steam at a different temperature and therefore pressure. Trees used for paper generally come from managed forest called timberlands. It is common for two new trees to be planted for every harvested tree.
- I am sure that they realise, as those whom I met last year in Canada realised, that our inability to buy more from them is the result of our dollar situation, and that the more we can do to increase our exports to Canada, the more we shall be able to buy from them.
- The liberty of the citizen depends to some extent upon the vigilant exposure by the local paper of anything which is bad or open to proper criticism in the community.

- It also utilizes steam, and to do it justice we will be covering it in a future article.

- Whilst the UK Paper Industry’s use of recovered fibre is a major success story, cellulose fibre from wood, which is a naturally renewable resource, is a fundamental raw material in papermaking.
However, this is thought to be reduced by comparison to demand in early2018. Tonbridge and Malling Council had two paper recycling contracts with the firm to take its kerbside collection and waste from its paper banks near supermarkets and leisure centres. It would have cost about £35m to convert the machine at Aylesford Newsprint to handle brown paper and cardboard, money the firm didn’t have.

- Archived photographs reflect the Daily Herald’s idiosyncratic view of the world; they also provide fascinating insights into the then-emergent profession of photojournalism.
- Fireless locomotives still possessed pistons and connecting rods, as per standard engines, but produced no harmful emissions and, per unit, had lower purchase and maintenance costs.
The ideal syphon should be designed and sized so as to keep the thickness and variation of condensate film to a minimum. Condensate, blowthrough steam, air and non-condensable gases are removed from the dryer using a device called a siphon. A siphon is simply a dip pipe which the condensate mixture is removed by.
Some managed timberlands are tree farms, where trees are planted and harvested over and over again. It is thought that this cycle can go on indefinitely guaranteeing a long-term supply. Paper mills manage their water use, taking into account opportunities for water recovery and re-use. Targets are set and, with advances in technology, the amount of water needed has reduced. Due to advances in technology, the Corrugated Packaging Industry has managed to significantly reduce the weight of its products whilst retaining their strength.
Newspaper circulations have been in decline for years but the pandemic increased the rate of decline. In the first quarter of 2019, the 25 biggest titles in the US had a combined circulation of 4.7 million, meaning a 36% drop overall. Jeff Bezos’ Washington Post climbed one place in the ranking to third place (139,232), while News Corp-owned New York Post, which proved to be one of the US’s most resilient papers during the pandemic, took fourth spot (135,983). The title, which has successively climbed up recent rankings, saw the smallest year-on-year circulation drop among the top ten papers (7%). Combined average daily print circulation of the 25 biggest dailies was 2.6 million in the year to March, compared to 3 million the year before, according to data from the Alliance for Audited Media.

The wire is a woven plastic mesh conveyor belt which can be up to 35 metres long and as wide as the paper machine. The stock by now is milky in appearance where it has been diluted with water. The stock flows from a flow box onto the wire which distributes the fibres evenly over the whole width of the paper machine. As the paper stock flows from the flow box onto the wire, the water drains away through the mesh leaving tiny fibres as a mat on top of the mesh. By the time the stock has travelled half way down the wire, a high percentage of water has drained away.
