Its more punk-rock sound was a reflection of the maturation of the group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's increased ability on the drums and a more confident, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was more precise, sharper and less cloned on previous recordings.
After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live performance in Amsterdam which was released as a two-CD set titled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a brand new studio album a few months later and embarked on a tour around the world to promote the album. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to discover songs that had never been recorded prior to. It was completed as a double-album titled Then and Now in 2001. It was the first album in the history of the band not to include one single track with the word "A" in the title, and it also contained one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity.
