Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that forms in the linings that cover organs. It usually affects the lungs (pleura) but can also affect the abdominal lining (peritoneum) as well as the heart or testicles.
Exposure to asbestos fibres is the main cause of mesothelioma. Typically, symptoms don't appear until decades after exposure.
Symptoms
Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that is found in the lining of specific organs. It typically begins in the layers of tissue that line the lungs (pleura) but it could be found in the tummy's lining (peritoneum) or, less frequently in the membrane that surrounds the heart (pericardium). Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos fibers which are inhaled into the lung and ingested. The symptoms may manifest for years or even decades after exposure. The symptoms of mesothelioma can be difficult to identify because they are similar to many other diseases. They are difficult to determine because they change. It is important to consult an expert if you experience any unusual symptoms, especially if you have an history of asbestos exposure.
The majority of patients with mesothelioma experience pain and difficulty breathing. Other typical symptoms include dry cough and chest wall pain. Other symptoms include weight loss, fever, fatigue, a lump in the chest or belly and a change in the way you cough. Mesothelioma symptoms can take 10 to 50 years to manifest, and the first symptoms are often confused with other illnesses, such as pneumonia or the flu.
The most commonly encountered form is pleural mesothelioma. A chest cavity filled with fluid is the most common sign. This symptom is called pleural effusion. It can cause chest pain, shortness in breath and tenderness to contact.
If asbestos mesothelioma spreads it can cause abdominal discomfort along with bloating, abdominal discomfort, and weight loss. Mesothelioma can also cause swelling in the legs or face.

Diagnosis
Due to the lengthy latency period and difficulty describing symptoms, it can be difficult to identify mesothelioma. They should also share their asbestos exposure information with their doctor to ensure that the correct tests are performed.
Mesothelioma is a condition that occurs when asbestos fibres are inhaled and become trapped in the lungs, creating irritation. As time passes, this irritation can cause cancerous cells to develop and grow and spread (metastasize) throughout the body. Mesothelioma symptoms may resemble other diseases and can be mistaken for something less serious, like pneumonia or bronchitis. This can lead to patients being misdiagnosed, or not being diagnosed at all.
A physical examination and the patient's asbestos exposure history are the first steps to diagnosing mesothelioma. The doctor examines the chest using a stethoscope and asks about the symptoms that the patient may be experiencing. Once a mesothelioma diagnosis is suspected the doctor will request imaging scans.
These include a chest X-ray that uses electromagnetic radiation to create an image of the lungs. This will show any accumulation of fluid on one side of the lungs and calcium deposits, which can be seen when the pleura becomes scarred.
The doctor will also order a CT scan of the chest or abdomen, which will provide more precise images of the lungs and stomach. The doctor will then be able to determine if the cancer is confined to the lungs, or if it has spread.
In certain instances, a surgical biopsy will be needed to confirm the diagnosis of mesothelioma. During this procedure, the surgeon will make a small incision in the thoracic cavity or abdominal cavity to remove tissues to allow for a laboratory examination.
These tests will help determine whether mesothelioma is present and the stage at which it is. Once the results have been determined the doctor can formulate a treatment plan. The goal of mesothelioma treatments is to stop the cancer and improve the quality of life of the patient.
Treatment
Mesothelioma is a malignant condition that affects the thin layer of protection that surrounds many organs, including the lungs is caused by exposure to asbestos. Exposure to asbestos, which is a grouping of minerals that has microscopic fibers, and was once widely used for construction, is the main cause. The symptoms typically manifest at least a decade after exposure. Treatment options include radiation, chemotherapy and immunotherapy. The average life expectancy following diagnosis is between 12 and 21 months.
Malignant mesothelioma may cause many symptoms, including breathlessness and chest pain in the rib cage. It can also affect reproductive organs as well as the heart. It is typically diagnosed when someone seeks medical attention due to these symptoms. The doctor will ask the patient if they have ever been exposed to asbestos, and what symptoms are present.
Doctors are able to diagnose mesothelioma through taking a sample from the affected tissue, which is called biopsy. The sample is then examined under a microscope to look for cancerous cells. Other tests, like CT scans or MRIs are performed by doctors to determine the kind of mesothelioma that a patient has. These tests can assist doctors in determining the location and extent of the cancer.
There are four distinct types of mesothelioma. the type of mesothelioma a patient has can affect their prognosis. The most common type is pleural, and is a type of mesothelioma that occurs in the linings the lung. The other three types include peritoneal, testicular and pericardial.
Once a doctor has determined the type of mesothelioma they will they will suggest treatments. The best combination is chemotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy. This will increase a person's survival chances, especially in the case of an early diagnosis.
Mesothelioma is most often diagnosed in people who have been exposed to asbestos. However, the signs and symptoms of this disease can be misinterpreted as other conditions or diseases.
