How to Replace an audi car key cover G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated near the transmission's edge just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult as there are two different connector pins and they have different functions but the most effective method of testing it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when it is operating at its maximum. If you're experiencing issues with this sensor, look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power like the engine is out of gas or injectors aren't firing any more. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. I put tissue over each injector hole, and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the three with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got zero ohm. So i assume the problem is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car is able to start when the G28 is not plugged in and runs fine when it is plugged in however it is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is 0.

I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. Testing them is easy - put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these goes wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner which can cause the engine to shut down.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox or a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, or a misfire in gear. It is likely that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you experience any of these signs. The good news is that they are very cheap and readily available, especially in the case of a Bosch model, like ours. Alternately, the GM version of this part is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

This sensor can cause the transmission to malfunction and other components in the car to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49, via a grey wire. The ECU then uses and processes the signal to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost and then sends it on to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can verify continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should see approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between those points. This is a standard component across the audi q3 key 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU, so the best ones might be availble in wrecking yards.image
